How/Where to define path for Oracle client usage

Hello everyone,

I am just wondering where I am able to modify the path to which SQL services is referring when using Oracle client (i.e. for linked servers)

Background: I have SQL Server 2008R2 application in place. I want to create linked servers to two oracle based servers which are having different versions (8.1.6.3 <--> 8.1.7.4). When trying to connect to server version 8.1.6.3 I got error message"ORA-03134: Connection to this server is no longer supported" and realized that I need oracle client from lower version. So I installed oracle client 9.2.0.8 and with prompting sqlplus-query in command prompt I verified having functional connection to oracle server.

As I need the initial oracle client with higher version for other applications I do not want to unistall this one.

Is it possible to tell SQL services to use the lower version of oracle? (Or even possible to do this assignment for every individual linked server?)

Many thanks in advance.

Best Regards

Serjoscha
